Pony Express Day

Today makes the anniversary of one of the most legendary delivery services in recorded history. On April 3rd, 1860, the first Pony Express riders were pressed into action. This mail service experiment was not run by the government, but rather was a private enterprise designed to outpace the stage coach delivery. Swallows Return to San Juan Capistrano Day

San Juan Capistrano is a mission in California, founded by Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order. San Juan Capistrano is the oldest building still in use in California. The site was first consecrated in October 1775.
Native to this area is the cliff swallow, a migratory bird that spends winter in Argentina and travels 6000 miles to California to spend the spring and summer. (more…)
